My summer in the Mediterranean

Boredom is the best breeding ground for creativity. It's times of utter boredom, of solitude, where my most creative ideas have come about.

Boredom is the best breeding ground for creativity. It's times of utter boredom, of solitude, where my most creative ideas have come about. Whether that's inspiration to take up photography, write an article, create a website, take a course, or start an entrepreneurial pursuit, the seed to this has always been boredom. And boredom is exactly what I'm experiencing bountifully this summer in the Mediterranean.

You wouldn't expect someone to write about how bored they are when they're experiencing a summer in a place as idyllic as a town in the Mediterranean coast of Spain, would you? I didn't expect it either: moving to Spain and having a summer beach house is a literal dream come true. But can your dreams coming true—of living in what once only lived in your imagination—be the perfect space for a new vision to come about? Perhaps that is what's happening to me. Perhaps it's a feeling of boredom, but really, it's an opening of new possibilities, of growth, of desire, of amplitude in my mind and potential now that I've achieved yet another goal I once only deemed possible in my wildest dreams.

But why does a dream have the most illusive sense of self-actualization while also holding the negative connotation of being unachievable? Why do people—why do ourselves—only celebrate our dreams after they've become real; tangible rather than at the beginning when it's all illusion and inspiration?

MIA'S HAPPY PLACE

My summer in the Mediterranean is proving to be wonderfully underwhelming, and in this solitude and desire for more I feel utterly grateful. Grateful to have this space to feel bored, to question myself, and if I didn't have internet connection, I too would likely wander about gravity and why an apple fell on my head, or in my case grapes from the vines atop my terrace. Perhaps I would invent more than just this article of privileged complaint and existential wander.

I don't know, but for now I'll keep wandering the unpaved roads outside my Mediterranean home for the summer, leading me to a beach for a swim or a trail for a meditative run or to a cafe—with WiFi— where I shall publish my next blog post.
